Carbofex becomes a member of Negative Emissions Platform
Carbofex has developed a negative emissions technology that permanently removes atmospheric carbon by converting unutilised biomass into valuable biochar with its proprietary pyrolysis technology. The process removes CO2 from atmospheric circulation by using biochar as a carbon sink. In other words, it is a nature-based but industrial solution.

Carbofex currently operates its commercial facility in Tampere, Finland, which started in summer 2017 and is Europe’s largest EBC-certified biochar producer fully operational for over 5 years. To date, Carbofex has sold over 1000 tonnes of biochar and was the first certified biochar producer in the world to trade CO2 Removal Certificates, or CORCs, having created the PYCCS methodology together with Puro.Earth which launched in 2019.
The technology has removed over 3500 tonnes of CO2 to date. Among the multiple benefits of this technology is the syngas which is created and subsequently utilised to generate clean bioenergy for district heating for the local grid infrastructure.
Sampo Tukiainen, Carbofex CEO: "Biochar will be the most important negative emissions technology for the next 15-20 years. Production is growing rapidly; as are the uses for biochar in water filtration, soil applications, alongside building materials and of course within the voluntary carbon markets."
James MacPhail, Carbofex International Development: “For organisations seeking to address climate change through carbon sequestration and more specifically reaching their own internal goals of waste valorization and CO2 removal, now is the time to be embarking on the right approach.”
